Municipality in Imereti

Acting as a pivotal transport and logistical hub linking the Caucasus railway network with the Black Sea ports, Samtredia Municipality is heavily defined by the Rioni River basin. It is one of the most densely populated rural corridors in the Imereti region. The municipality oversees a highly granular network of 50 villages, one urban-type settlement (Kulashi), and the city of Samtredia. The extensive sub-categorization of villages into specific sub-basins reflects the historically high population density of the Imereti lowlands, which saw a demographic contraction from 62,556 residents in 1959 to 43,448 in recent estimates.
