Geography and Location

Ghaniri is located in the Imereti region of Western Georgia, within the Samtredia Municipality. The village is situated on the fertile Imereti Lowland, at an average elevation of 55 meters above sea level. Its location provides a classic example of the rural landscape of the region, characterized by flat terrain and proximity to the regional center of Samtredia.

Etymology and Legends

The name "Ghaniri" has deep roots in the Georgian language. In Old Georgian, the word referred to "lean" or "infertile" land. According to local folklore, the area was once covered by an impenetrable forest. It is said that runaway serfs from the neighboring Samegrelo region sought refuge here, clearing the woods to settle. The name Ghaniri was given to the settlement due to the initial challenges they faced with the soil's productivity.

Education and Local Heritage

The village has a notable history of education. The first school in Ghaniri was established in 1905 as a private two-class institution. By 1935, a full secondary school was founded. Today, the local school is named after Akaki Tereladze, a hero of World War II who was a native of the village. This institution remains a focal point for the community's social and cultural activities.
