Municipality in Kvemo Kartli
Located in Kvemo Kartli, Bolnisi Municipality covers 804 square kilometers and contains 46 villages alongside two urban-type settlements (Kazreti and Tamarisi). Demographically, it is dominated by ethnic Azerbaijanis, who make up 63.4% of the population. Bolnisi represents an administrative palimpsest. Originally established in 1818 by Swabian Germans as Katharinenfeld (and later renamed Luxemburg by the Soviets before becoming Bolnisi in 1943), the architectural heritage of the villages sharply contrasts with the current population. The village of Talaveri (historically known to its Azerbaijani inhabitants as Faxralı) is a prime example of post-Soviet tension; attempts to "Georgianize" toponyms during the early 1990s met with local resistance, demonstrating how municipal naming conventions frequently clash with localized ethnographic identities. Furthermore, settlements like Kazreti and Tamarisi were explicitly constructed as industrial appendages to house labor forces for the local gold/copper mines and poultry factories, respectively, highlighting the enduring legacy of Soviet utilitarian town planning.
