Chapala is one of the oldest and historically rich villages of Kvemo Kartli, located in the Bolnisi Municipality, on the right bank of the Mashavera River. The village is known for its strategic location and significant architectural monuments.

Geography and Location

The village is spread at an altitude of 480 meters above sea level, about 10 kilometers from Bolnisi. Its location in the Mashavera River valley was historically favorable for both defense and the development of agriculture.

Historical Monuments: Chapala Fortress

The main pride of the village is the Chapala Fortress, which is an important medieval defensive structure. The fortress is built near the confluence of the Mashavera and Bolnisistskali rivers, on a high rocky hill. It controlled important trade and military routes. The fortress complex includes a wall, towers, and the ruins of a church, which makes a great impression on the visitor.

Mashavera Bridge

Another attraction of the village is the 17th-century stone arched bridge over the Mashavera River. This bridge is a brilliant example of late medieval engineering and still maintains its original appearance.
