Geography and Location
Dzveli Kveshi is located in the Kvemo Kartli region, within the Bolnisi Municipality, at an elevation of 760 meters above sea level. The village is situated on the left bank of the Getistskali River (a tributary of the Mashavera), approximately 13 kilometers from the municipal center of Bolnisi. Its geographical setting is typical of the region, characterized by low mountains, fertile soil, and a temperate continental climate, providing excellent conditions for agriculture.
Historical Background
The village's history is deeply intertwined with the diverse ethnic and cultural tapestry of the region. In the late 18th and mid-19th centuries, the settlement was known as "Besh Oylu," which means "Five Families" in Turkish—according to local legend, five families were the original founders of the village. Later known as Zol-Göyəç, it was renamed Dzveli Kveshi in 1990 following Georgia's independence. The name "Dzveli Kveshi" (Old Kveshi) refers to its proximity to the historic Kveshi Fortress, a vital strategic point in medieval Georgia.
