In the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region, situated on the Colchis lowland between the Abasha and Noghela rivers, lies the town of Abasha. Located at just 23 meters above sea level, this settlement serves as the administrative center of the Abasha Municipality. Historical Development and Name

The territory of Abasha has been inhabited since ancient times. In the early 19th century, the village of Abasha was part of the Sachilao district. The development of the settlement into an urban center is closely linked to the construction of the Tbilisi-Poti railway in 1870 and the opening of a railway station here. This event spurred Abasha's economic and cultural revival, leading to it being granted town status in 1964.

The name "Abasha" is associated with an interesting legend. According to tradition, it derives from an Arabic word and is connected to an attempt by an Arab army to cross the river.
