Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti

Discover the realistic, everyday charm of the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region, featuring diverse landscapes and welcoming communities.

Black Sea lowlands to legendary high mountains

Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti is one of the most contrasting regions in Georgia. It unites the Black Sea coastal Kolkheti Lowland, the rich historical heritage in Samegrelo, and the majestic, snow-capped peaks of the Caucasus in Svaneti. This is a region where mystical nature and ancient culture merge.

Samegrelo: History and Canyons

  • Dadiani Palace (Zugdidi): The historical residence of the princes of Samegrelo, which houses unique artifacts, including personal items of Napoleon Bonaparte.
  • Martvili Canyon: A beautiful natural monument where you can take a boat ride on crystal-clear, emerald water and see stunning waterfalls.
  • Nokalakevi (Tsikhegoji): An ancient fortress-city associated with the Kingdom of Colchis and the mythical Argonauts.
  • Kolkheti National Park: An ideal place for bird watching and boating tours on Lake Paliastomi.

Zemo Svaneti: The Pearl of the Caucasus

  • Mestia: The administrative center of Svaneti, famous for its medieval towers and the Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography.
  • Ushguli: One of the highest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe (2,200 m), included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It offers a beautiful view of Shkhara (the highest peak in Georgia).
  • Hatsvali and Tetnuldi: Popular ski resorts that offer the best conditions for winter sports enthusiasts and beautiful panoramas in summer.
  • Trekking and Hiking: Svaneti is a paradise for mountaineering and trekking enthusiasts. Popular routes include the Koruldi Lakes and the Mestia-Ushguli trail.

Gastronomy: Megrelian and Svan Flavors

  • Megrelian Cuisine: Characterized by its spiciness and abundance of herbs. You must try Elarji, Gebzhalia, Megrelian Khachapuri, and Kharcho.
  • Svan Cuisine: Hearty dishes suited to the harsh mountain climate. The most famous are Kubdari (meat pie), Chvishtari, Tashmijabi, and Svanetian salt, which gives dishes a special aroma.
