Shermazana Shamirza Ruins

Duration: 1–3 hours

The archaeological site of Shermazana Shamirza is an abandoned medieval settlement located in the dry, rolling hills of the Kvemo Kartli region. Known in Georgian as a nasoflari, which translates to "a place where a village used to be," this complex offers a clear window into how rural communities lived and protected themselves during centuries of border warfare. The site bypasses standard tourist presentation, preservation, or reconstruction, leaving visitors with the atmospheric, raw stone footprints of an old Georgian settlement.

Defensive Architecture and Rural Settlement Layout

Unlike royal citadels or state-funded outposts, Shermazana Shamirza represents defensive measures built directly by locals. The layout takes full advantage of the high ground, providing clear viewpoints across the surrounding valleys to spot incoming threats early.

  • Dry-Stone Masonry: The structures are built using a traditional dry-stone technique, utilizing heavy, local stones stacked tightly without mortar.
  • Watchtower Foundations: Remnants of watchtowers are positioned strategically along the perimeter to secure the domestic quarters.
  • Interconnected Dwellings: Residential basements and stone foundations are grouped closely together, a common structural method in feudal Georgia designed to ease communication and mutual defense during an assault.

Regional Historical Context

During the Middle Ages, the southern frontiers of Georgia faced frequent incursions from neighboring nomadic tribes and imperial powers. Settlements throughout Kvemo Kartli were forced to function as small, decentralized strongholds. While exact archival data regarding when the village was permanently abandoned is scarce, archaeological indicators point to the late medieval era. Over time, continuous military pressure combined with changing trade routes forced the population to move to larger fortified towns, leaving the stone structures to nature.
