Nadarbazevi Fortress

Standing on a high ridge in the historic frontier, Nadarbazevi Fortress offers a rare look at defensive medieval architecture left completely untouched by modern reconstruction. The complex sits on an elevated position overlooking the rolling plains and river valleys of the Kvemo Kartli region, near Tetritskaro. Its name, which translates to "the place of a former palace," indicates that this site was not just a defensive military post, but also an important feudal estate and residential hall for local nobility.

Throughout the Middle Ages, the southern borders of Georgia faced constant military pressure from expanding regional empires. Fortresses like Nadarbazevi were built as vital links in a grand defensive network of watchtowers and outposts. These strongholds were positioned to monitor incoming forces and guard the critical lowland routes leading directly to Tbilisi.

Architecture and Medieval Stonework

The architecture of the ruins reveals multiple periods of construction and reinforcement. At the base of the primary defensive walls, observers can identify heavy, roughly shaped boulders that mirror ancient cyclopean building techniques. The upper layers consist of local quarry stone bound tightly with a durable lime mortar that has withstood centuries of harsh weather. Visitors can still easily trace the original layout of the protective perimeter wall, the central defensive tower, and the foundation stones of interior residential quarters and storage rooms that once supplied the garrison.
