Glasenapp Tower

Duration: 1 hour

The Glasenapp Tower is a unique nineteenth-century astronomical structure located in the mountain resort of Abastumani, within the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of southwestern Georgia. Built on the woody slopes of Mount Kanobili, this stone tower predates the famous modern astrophysical observatory and marks the absolute beginning of systematic astronomical observations in Georgia. It reflects a fascinating period when European scientific ambition converged with the pristine, clear night skies of the Lesser Caucasus mountains.

The Scientific Legacy of Georg von Glasenapp

In the late 1800s, the Russian imperial astronomer Georg von Glasenapp (George von Glasenapp) arrived in Abastumani to utilize its exceptionally stable atmospheric conditions. Recognizing that the high altitude and low humidity provided perfect visibility, he set up a temporary telescope. Between 1892 and 1893, Glasenapp used this specific location to observe close binary star systems, publishing observations that earned international recognition in the scientific community.

Architecture and Construction of the Tower

To house the delicate instruments and provide a stable viewing platform, a dedicated stone tower was constructed. Unlike typical medieval Georgian defensive towers, this structure was designed purely for astronomical science. The stone masonry features thick, sturdy walls to minimize vibration and a circular top designed to support early observation equipment. Today, the tower stands as an important historical monument, representing the foundational step before the official establishment of the larger Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory on the same mountain in 1932.
