Abastumani — A Resort of Healing Air and Stars
Hidden in the Otskhe river gorge in the Adigeni Municipality of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region, lies the townlet of Abastumani. Situated at an elevation of 1340 meters above sea level, this unique climatic and balneological resort has attracted people for centuries with its healing properties and breathtaking nature. Abastumani is not just a vacation spot; it is a living museum where 19th-century aristocratic architecture blends with untouched coniferous forests.
Historical Past and the Romanov Legacy
The history of Abastumani dates back to the distant past. In the 9th-10th centuries, this place was called "Odzrkhe," and later "Otskhe." The current name is believed to be associated with the Abazasdze noble family.
The golden age of Abastumani as a resort began in the 1870s when representatives of the Russian Empire started developing it. A special role was played by the brother of the Russian Emperor, Grand Duke George Romanov, who suffered from tuberculosis and chose Abastumani for his treatment. Under his initiative, beautiful wooden palaces were built, and infrastructure was developed. The complex of Romanov palaces remains one of the town's main architectural gems today.
Key Landmarks
Abastumani offers a diverse experience for its guests:
- Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory — Located on Mount Kanobili, high above the townlet, is the observatory founded in 1932. The clear and calm atmosphere of Abastumani creates ideal conditions for stargazing. A night excursion to observe the sky through a telescope is an unforgettable experience.
- Thermal Waters — The resort is famous for its hyperthermal, weakly mineralized waters, which have been used since ancient times to treat various ailments.
- Church of St. Alexander Nevsky (New Zarzma) — A beautiful church built at the end of the 19th century, which is a replica of the Zarzma Monastery and was commissioned by the Romanovs.
Nature and Climate
The main wealth of Abastumani is its air. The gorge is surrounded by dense coniferous forests (mostly spruce and pine). In spring, during the pine pollination period, the air is especially saturated with healing pollen, making it ideal for people with respiratory issues.
Local Lifestyle
Today, about 900 people live in Abastumani. In recent years, the resort has undergone significant rehabilitation—historic wooden houses and infrastructure have been restored. Traveling here means immersing yourself in tranquility, breathing crystal-clear air, and feeling the breath of a historical era that is palpable in every street of Abastumani.
