St. George Church in Cholashi

The St. George Church in Cholashi, locally known as Jgrag, stands on a mountain slope in the Upper Svaneti region. Built during the high Middle Ages, this small stone sanctuary serves as an important spiritual hub for the community of Mestia municipality. The building reflects the early medieval traditions of communal worship in Northwest Georgia, where small, durable family shrines formed the core of local religious and social life.

Medieval Architecture and Clan Significance

Architecturally, the church is a classic example of a single-nave hall structure, a design widely adopted across the Caucasus highlands due to its structural resilience. Workers constructed the exterior using roughly shaped limestone and local slate blocks, allowing the building to withstand intense alpine winters. The plain exterior conceals an interior that houses precious medieval frescoes painted by local masters. These murals depict classic Christian iconography alongside specific warrior saints highly revered by mountain communities.

In Svan society, churches like Jgrag served purposes far beyond daily prayer. They functioned as secular meeting houses, judicial courts where community elders administered traditional customary law, and safe repositories for rare icons, books, and silver relics during times of foreign invasion. The building stands today as an important monument of Svan cultural preservation, maintaining its original floor plan and defensive positioning intact.
