Chimochismaghali Peak

Duration: Full day to 2 days

Chimochismaghali is a 3,851 m rocky peak in the Greater Caucasus, above the Khevsureti villages of Akhieli and Chimgha in Dusheti Municipality. It draws experienced hikers and mountaineers for its remote ridges, wide views toward the main range, and quiet alpine setting far from busy trails.

Why Visit Chimochismaghali & What to Expect

Chimochismaghali offers a true high-mountain feel without the crowds of Kazbegi. Expect steep grass slopes, loose scree, and rocky outcrops near the summit. The panorama opens to neighboring Khevsureti peaks, deep valleys, and on clear days the main Caucasus divide. There are no marked paths, no huts, and no water sources above the villages, so self-sufficiency is essential.

Trail Details & Natural Wonders

  • Start point: Akhieli village at about 1,800 m.
  • Elevation gain: roughly 2,000 m to the summit.
  • Terrain: shepherd trails through alpine meadows, then moraine and blocky rock. Navigation skills and a GPS track are needed.
  • Nature notes: summer meadows with wildflowers, marmots and birds of prey. The upper part is exposed to wind and fast-changing weather.

Most parties treat it as a long day push for very fit hikers or a 2-day trip with a high camp.

How to Get There & Road Conditions

From Tbilisi drive to Zhinvali and turn toward Shatili. The road beyond Barisakho is unpaved, narrow, with gravel, potholes and river fords. A 4x4 with good clearance is required; a sedan cannot reach Akhieli safely. Driving time from Tbilisi to Akhieli is 4–6 hours depending on conditions. Park in the village and continue on foot. No public transport reaches the trailhead.

Practical Travel Tips & Best Season to Visit

  • Best window: July to early September when snow has melted and the Shatili road is most stable.
  • Gear: layered clothing, waterproof shell, sturdy boots, trekking poles, map/GPS, first aid, and enough water for the ascent.
  • Safety: weather can shift from sun to fog and rain in minutes. Start early, turn back if visibility drops.
  • Facilities: no shops or guesthouses in Akhieli. Base yourself in Shatili or Barisakho, or camp with Leave No Trace principles.
  • Respect: the area has active pastures and historic towers. Keep distance from livestock and do not enter private yards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a guide?

For first-time visitors, a local guide is strongly advised. The route is unmarked and the terrain is easy to lose in fog.

Can I reach the trailhead by sedan?

No. The Shatili road and the spur to Akhieli require 4x4. After heavy rain the fords get deeper and the surface gets slick.

Is there water on the route?

Streams exist near the villages. Higher up, sources are unreliable in late summer. Carry 2–3 liters per person.

What to See Nearby

  • Tsiskarauli Tower in Akhieli, a restored Khevsur defensive tower.
  • Shatili fortress village, 30–40 minutes drive, with stone towers and a small museum.
  • Mutso and Ardoti, dramatic tower settlements deeper in the Argun valley.
  • Anatoris Akldama, a historic burial site near Shatili.
