How to Get There & Road Conditions

From Tbilisi drive to Zhinvali and turn toward Shatili. The road beyond Barisakho is unpaved, narrow, with gravel, potholes and river fords. A 4x4 with good clearance is required; a sedan cannot reach Akhieli safely. Driving time from Tbilisi to Akhieli is 4–6 hours depending on conditions. Park in the village and continue on foot. No public transport reaches the trailhead.

• Best window: July to early September when snow has melted and the Shatili road is most stable.
• Gear: layered clothing, waterproof shell, sturdy boots, trekking poles, map/GPS, first aid, and enough water for the ascent.
• Safety: weather can shift from sun to fog and rain in minutes. Start early, turn back if visibility drops.
• Facilities: no shops or guesthouses in Akhieli. Base yourself in Shatili or Barisakho, or camp with Leave No Trace principles.
• Respect: the area has active pastures and historic towers. Keep distance from livestock and do not enter private yards.
