Region

Mtskheta-Mtianeti

Mtskheta-Mtianeti is a prominent Georgian region known for its mix of agriculture, trade, and authentic local culture.

Historic heartland and high mountain gateway

Mtskheta-Mtianeti combines the ancient spiritual center of Georgia and the breathtaking mountains of the Caucasus. This region begins just a few kilometers from Tbilisi and follows the Georgian Military Highway to the Russian border. Here you will find ancient temples, high mountain passes, and ski resorts.

Mtskheta: The Ancient Capital of Georgia

  • Svetitskhoveli: An 11th-century cathedral and UNESCO World Heritage Site where, according to tradition, Christ's robe is buried.
  • Jvari Monastery: A 6th-century temple overlooking the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers. Its silhouette is a symbol of Georgian architecture.
  • Shiomghvimi Monastery: A historical monastic complex nestled in limestone cliffs a short distance from Mtskheta.

Georgian Military Highway and Kazbegi

  • Ananuri Complex: A medieval fortress built on the shore of the Zhinvali Reservoir, offering beautiful views.
  • Gudauri: One of Georgia's most popular and developed ski resorts, ideal for winter sports and summer paragliding.
  • Gergeti Trinity Church (Stepantsminda): A 14th-century church set against the backdrop of the Caucasus Mountains, located at 2,200 meters above sea level. This view is the calling card of Georgia.
  • Dariali and Truso Gorges: Unique natural monuments with massive cliffs, mineral springs, and ancient towers.

Mountain Culture

  • Khevsureti: A mystical corner on the northern slope of the Caucasus. Shatili and Mutso are must-sees – unique medieval tower-villages that served as both dwellings and fortresses.
  • Pshavi: The homeland of the Georgian poet Vazha-Pshavela, known for its beautiful nature and rafting tours on the Aragvi River.

Local Cuisine

  • Khinkali: The main dish of the mountainous region. Traditional Pshav and Khevsur khinkali are made with minced meat and sometimes wild mountain herbs (like wild mint).
  • Guda Cheese and Khachoerbo: Sheep cheese with a unique aroma and traditional mountain dishes that perfectly suit the cold climate.
