Barisakho

Barisakho is a key administrative and agricultural village in the Dusheti Municipality, serving as a primary gateway to the Khevsureti region.

Village · Dusheti municipality · Mtskheta-Mtianeti

Barisakho serves as a primary administrative and economic hub within the Khevsureti sub-province of the Dusheti Municipality. Situated at an elevation of approximately 1,460 meters in the Aragvi River valley, the village functions as a transit point for travelers moving deeper into the upper reaches of Khevsureti. Its economy relies primarily on subsistence agriculture, animal husbandry, and, increasingly, services supporting mountain tourism.

Geography and Climate

The village is positioned on the right bank of the Khevsureti Aragvi River. The terrain is defined by rugged mountainous slopes that transition into alpine meadows at higher altitudes and dense coniferous forests in the valleys. The climate is characterized by significant seasonal variation: winters are marked by substantial snowfall, while summers provide moderate temperatures, typical of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti highlands. Access is provided via regional road networks that connect the village to the municipal center of Dusheti.

Administrative and Cultural Role

Historically, Barisakho has acted as the administrative center for the surrounding communities in lower Khevsureti. While many smaller nearby settlements have faced depopulation, Barisakho remains a year-round residence for local families. The village retains traditional elements of Khevsureti social structures, where community life often centers on historical family ties and shared land management. Visitors pass through Barisakho to reach the historical defense towers and fortified settlements further north, making it a critical junction for those navigating the regional geography. The village also houses basic infrastructure and services necessary for the local population and transient travelers.
