Intsira Waterfall

Duration: 1–3 hours

Tucked away in the Martvili municipality, near the village of Kurzu, the Intsira Waterfall remains one of the region's best-kept secrets. While many travelers head straight for the famous commercial canyons, Intsira offers a far more intimate and raw encounter with nature. The waterfall is formed by the Intsira River, which flows through rugged limestone formations, eventually plummeting into a deep, crystal-clear pool that glows with a distinct turquoise hue, especially on sunny days.

Access and Logistics

The trek to the falls is an easy-to-moderate forest hike, though it requires a bit of attention. The trail is natural and unpaved, so skip the sandals; sturdy sneakers or hiking boots are highly recommended, particularly because the rocks near the water stay slick throughout the year. From the center of Martvili, expect a 20–30 minute drive to the trailhead, followed by a 15–20 minute walk through the lush forest canopy. Since this is an untouched site, there are no cafes or visitor centers, so carrying a backpack with drinking water and snacks is mandatory.

The Experience

What makes Intsira stand out is the absence of noise. You won't find ticket booths, gift shops, or loud crowds here—just the rhythmic sound of water hitting the stone and the breeze moving through the trees. It is an ideal spot for those who enjoy slow travel, nature photography, or simply a quiet hour of meditation. The best time to visit is during the spring when the flow is most vigorous, or early summer when the forest is a vibrant, deep green. It is the perfect escape if you are looking to balance out the more crowded tourist hubs in Samegrelo.

Nearby Recommendations

If you are spending time in the area, the Martvili Canyon is a must-visit for its boat trips, though it will be much busier. For a change of pace, the Martvili Monastery provides a glimpse into the region’s profound medieval history and is famous for its well-preserved frescoes. Additionally, if your road trip takes you toward the Imereti border, consider a stop at the Okatse Canyon for its high-altitude walkways.
