Abhesi Waterfall

Duration: 1–2 hours

Abhesi Waterfall lies in the Samegrelo region, a few kilometres from the village of Abhesi and close to Martvili Canyon. It is a small, steady cascade that drops over a mossy rock face into a clear, cold pool. The walk from the road is short and easy, which makes it a good stop for families, a quick nature break, or a quiet picnic spot away from the busier canyons nearby.

Why Visit Abhesi Waterfall & What to Expect

The site is modest and undeveloped. You get a calm forest setting, the sound of water, and shade from dense, humid woodland typical of Samegrelo. Flow is strongest in spring after snowmelt, and softer in late summer when the fall turns into a thin veil. There are no ticket booths or cafes at the fall itself, so expect a natural, low-key experience.

Trail Details & Natural Wonders

The path to the waterfall is an informal dirt track of about 200–300 m from the nearest roadside parking. It is mostly flat with some roots and stones. The base area is constantly wet from spray, so slippery rocks and mud are common year-round. Surrounding vegetation is lush, with ferns, moss and broadleaf trees. The pool is shallow and cold, not suited for swimming.

How to Get There & Road Conditions

From Martvili town, drive west toward Abhesi village. The last 2–3 km are on a narrow rural road with patches of gravel and potholes. A standard sedan can reach the parking area in dry weather; after heavy rain a higher-clearance car is more comfortable. The final approach to the water is on foot only, about 5–10 minutes.

Practical Travel Tips & Best Season to Visit

  • Wear shoes with good grip; the ground near the fall is slick.
  • Bring water and snacks; there are no facilities on site.
  • Morning light filters through the canopy and is good for photos.
  • Best seasons are spring and early summer for flow, and autumn for colour. Winter is quiet but the path can be muddy.
  • Leave no trash and stay on the worn path to protect moss and soil.

Frequently Asked Questions

The pool is shallow, cold, and rocky. Most visitors just paddle or take photos.
