Village · Kazbegi municipality · Municipality in Mtskheta-Mtianeti

Geography and Location

Gusalti is located in the Kazbegi Municipality, within the historical region of Khevi. It lies in the upper reaches of the Truso Valley, on the left bank of the Tergi River.

  • Elevation: At 2275 meters above sea level, Gusalti is one of the highest former settlements in the region, nestled on the southern slopes of the Khokhi Range.
  • Landscape: The village is surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Greater Caucasus, characterized by sparse vegetation and rugged mountain terrain.

History and Architecture

The village is home to a significant historical monument, the Gusalti Tower, which dates back to the late Middle Ages.

  • Defensive Structure: The tower is a rectangular stone building (5.25 x 5 meters) standing about 9.4 meters tall. It was constructed using rough-cut local stone, designed to withstand both the elements and historical conflicts.
  • Design: Currently, two stories remain. The entrance is located on the southern side, elevated 2.75 meters above the ground for defense. The walls feature narrow window slits and embrasures used for protection.

Local Context

Gusalti is part of the Truso Valley's "ghost villages"—settlements that have become unpopulated over the last few decades. The area is a popular destination for hikers and explorers due to its mineral springs, colorful travertines, and the haunting beauty of abandoned stone houses and towers that stand against the backdrop of the Caucasus Mountains. It serves as a silent witness to the traditional mountain life of the Khevi region.
