Overview

Gharta is a small yet historically rich village located in the Khashuri Municipality of the Shida Kartli region. Perched on the northern slopes of the Trialeti Range, it forms part of the Khalebi community. • The Battle of 1625: In the early 17th century, the fields near Gharta witnessed a major victory for the Georgian royal army. Led by the legendary commander Giorgi Saakadze, the Georgian forces managed to crush a superior Qizilbash army, effectively halting their march toward the capital, Tbilisi.
• Defense Against Raids (1778): History repeated itself in 1778 when a 300-man Georgian detachment successfully repelled a force of 500 Lezgian raiders near the village, protecting the surrounding settlements from destruction.
• Scholarly Records: The village holds a place in Georgian historiography, appearing on the maps of Vakhushti Bagrationi and in the detailed descriptions of Ioane Batonishvili.
