Gharta's history is marked by its strategic location, which made it a site of crucial military encounters:

  • The Battle of 1625: In the early 17th century, the fields near Gharta witnessed a major victory for the Georgian royal army. Led by the legendary commander Giorgi Saakadze, the Georgian forces managed to crush a superior Qizilbash army, effectively halting their march toward the capital, Tbilisi.
  • Defense Against Raids (1778): History repeated itself in 1778 when a 300-man Georgian detachment successfully repelled a force of 500 Lezgian raiders near the village, protecting the surrounding settlements from destruction.
  • Scholarly Records: The village holds a place in Georgian historiography, appearing on the maps of Vakhushti Bagrationi and in the detailed descriptions of Ioane Batonishvili.
