Shida Kartli

Shida Kartli is located in the heart of Georgia. It is an ancient cultural center known for its cave cities, royal fortresses, and beautiful valleys. Shida Kartli is the cradle of Georgian statehood, preserving both ancient and medieval historical treasures.

Rock-Hewn and Ancient Cities

• Uplistsikhe: One of the oldest rock-hewn cities in the Caucasus (1st millennium BC), which was the political and religious center of pagan Georgia. The city still retains traces of streets, squares, and an ancient theater.
• Dzalisa and Grakliani Gora: Ancient archaeological sites testifying to the high development of the Kingdom of Iberia, featuring mosaic floors and ancient temples.

Fortresses and Temples

• Gori Fortress: A medieval citadel erected in the center of Gori, which protected the city from enemies and offers excellent panoramic views.
• Ateni Sioni: A 7th-century church located in the beautiful Ateni Gorge, renowned for its unique frescoes and architecture.

• Atenuri Wine: The Ateni Gorge is historically known for its microzone, where excellent Georgian sparkling and white wine is produced.
• Kartli Khachapuri and Nazuki: Suramian Nazuki (sweet bread with spices) baked in a tone is an integral part of traveling through this region.
