Zurgiani Tower

Duration: 1 hour

The Zurgiani Tower stands as a stark marker of human presence in the remote Truso Valley. Located near the village of Abano, this structure is a testament to the tactical ingenuity of the medieval Khevi people. Known locally as Natsikhari, meaning "the site of a fortress," these ruins are not merely piles of stone; they are the remains of a defensive network that once monitored the vital passage along the Terek River as it cut through the heart of the Caucasus Mountains.

Medieval Strategy and Construction

The tower occupies a natural rise, chosen centuries ago to grant defenders an unobstructed view of the surrounding mountain floor. Construction followed the traditional dry-stone or lime-mortar techniques common in the highland regions, utilizing locally sourced limestone and slate.

  • Base Stability: The thickness of the surviving ground-floor walls indicates a multi-level design, intended to provide safety during periods of instability.
  • Strategic Purpose: Like many towers in the Truso Valley, this structure served as a lookout point, part of a rapid warning system where signal fires could alert neighboring villages to approaching threats.

Today, the site remains largely in its original, rugged state. While the roof and upper floors have long since succumbed to gravity and the relentless mountain weather, the base remains a focal point for those exploring the geological wonders of the Truso gorge. The nearby travertine formations and mineral-rich springs further highlight the unique landscape where these medieval builders chose to settle.
