Church of the Savior in Zugdidi

Standing in the central district of Zugdidi, the Church of the Savior is a key spiritual landmark for the capital of the Samegrelo region. While most travelers focus their attention entirely on the nearby palace grounds, this active Orthodox church provides an authentic look into modern local life and religious traditions away from the main tourist crowds.

The Architecture and Modern Craftsmanship

Built in the early 21st century, the structure serves as an excellent example of contemporary Georgian ecclesiastical design. The architects strictly followed the traditional cross-in-square blueprint that has dictated Orthodox architecture in the Caucasus for over a millennium. The exterior walls are faced with smooth, light-toned stone blocks, showcasing clean masonry lines. Unlike the historic medieval cathedrals found throughout Georgia, this building has an intimate scale that integrates cleanly into the surrounding green spaces and town landscape.

Interior Design and Iconography

The interior space is characterized by high ceilings and exceptional acoustics, common in classical eastern Christian designs. The walls are covered in detailed frescoes and iconographic paintings. Although these murals are entirely modern creations, the artists executed them with deep reverence for centuries-old Byzantine and Georgian canonical traditions, using rich colors to depict Biblical scenes and regional saints.
