Sunken Church of Zhinvali (Jvaripatiosani)
The Mystery of the Sunken Church
Hidden beneath the waters of the Zhinvali Reservoir lies a remarkable piece of history: the 12th-century Jvaripatiosani (Holy Cross) Church. When the Zhinvali Hydroelectric Power Plant was built in the 1980s, the historic town of Zhinvali was intentionally flooded. While most of the town's remnants were lost to the depths, the sturdy stone structure of the Jvaripatiosani Church survived.
A Seasonal Phenomenon
For about six months of the year, the church is completely submerged underwater. However, during the winter and early spring months, when the water level of the reservoir drops significantly, the church dramatically emerges from the depths. During this short window, it is entirely accessible on foot. You can walk right inside its ancient stone walls, where remnants of its past stand in stark contrast to the mud and watermarks left by the reservoir.
Practical Information
- When to Visit: The church is typically visible and accessible from late January to April, depending on the water levels. Always check local conditions before planning a trip specifically to see it.
- How to Get There: It requires a slight detour from the main Georgian Military Highway and a short, sometimes muddy walk down into the reservoir basin. Sturdy, waterproof footwear is highly recommended.
- Photography: This is a fantastic spot for photography, offering a unique, eerie, yet historically beautiful atmosphere that few standard tours include.
