Zhamushi Matskhvari Church

Duration: 1 hour

The Zhamushi Matskhvari Church (Church of the Savior) stands on a high mountain slope within the Mulakhi community of Upper Svaneti. Constructed during the golden era of medieval Georgian highland architecture, this small stone hall church serves as a central spiritual pillar for the local Svan clans. Built to endure severe alpine winters, its heavy stone walls protect a remarkably preserved interior environment where ancient community heritage remains alive.

Medieval Architecture and Frescoes

Built from local stone blocks, the structure follows the characteristic single-nave hall layout seen throughout the Mestia municipality. The exterior is deliberately minimalist, designed to withstand heavy snow and geological shifts. Inside, the church retains an extraordinary cycle of medieval murals executed by local masters of the Svanetian iconographic school. These frescoes depict holy figures with distinct expressive features, deep color palettes, and unique regional iconographic variations that set highland Georgian painting apart from Byzantine styles. Beyond the walls, the church ground houses an impressive collection of historical processional crosses and ancient metalwork, which the community has protected collectively for generations.
