Tergi River
The Tergi River, known as the Terek in Russian, is a major river in the Northern Caucasus. It originates in the Kazbegi municipality of Georgia, on the slopes of Mount Kazbek, from the Zilga-Khokh glacier. The river initially flows vigorously through the spectacular Darial Gorge, a deep and narrow canyon that has served as a crucial passage through the Caucasus Mountains for millennia. The Georgian Military Highway closely follows the Tergi through this gorge. After leaving Georgia, the Tergi flows through Russia, eventually emptying into the Caspian Sea. The upper reaches of the Tergi in Georgia are characterized by extreme alpine beauty, fast currents, and significant historical and strategic importance. The river is a central feature of the Kazbegi region's dramatic landscape.
