Tbashavi Lake
Tbashavi Lake is a small alpine body of water located in the high mountains of the Racha region. Situated at an elevation of roughly 2,600 meters above sea level near the Chanchakhi range, this remote body of water features deep blue, cold glacial meltwater that reflects the surrounding jagged cliffs of the Greater Caucasus. The environment here is characterized by open alpine landscapes, offering complete isolation from heavy tourist crowds.
Natural Landscape and Environment
Unlike the more prominent lakes in the lower valleys of Georgia, Tbashavi is a high-altitude water body shaped by glacial action and seasonal snowmelt. The surrounding terrain consists of steep ridges, scree slopes, and fields of wild grasses. The high-altitude alpine climate means that temperatures remain low even during the peak of summer, and night conditions frequently drop close to freezing. During the brief summer season, the rocky soil around the water turns into vibrant alpine meadows filled with local flora. The area provides seasonal grazing grounds for herds of horses and cattle from lower villages.
Cultural Context and Highland Wilderness
The area surrounding Tbashavi Lake is historically connected to the highland communities of Upper Racha, particularly the historic villages of Glola and Shovi. Local shepherds have utilized these steep paths for generations to move livestock to higher pastures during the warm months. The mountain ridges above the lake offer clear views across the wider Chanchakhi valley and the peaks marking the northern border of Georgia. The lake remains a preserved piece of northern Racha's wilderness, showing no signs of modern construction or intervention.
