Racha-Lechkhumi and Lower Svaneti

Explore Racha-Lechkhumi and Lower Svaneti, a region that balances traditional Georgian heritage with steady economic development.

Quiet mountains, valleys, and slower northern travel

Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti is one of the most beautiful, peaceful, and untouched mountainous regions of Georgia. It is famous for its forests, beautiful lakes, unique grape varieties, and the distinct calmness of its people. If you are looking for a true escape into nature, this region is an ideal choice.

Racha: Mountain Beauty and Wine

  • Shaori Lake: A beautiful reservoir that is especially impressive in autumn when the surrounding forests are painted in a thousand colors. Ideal for fishing and picnics.
  • Nikortsminda and Barakoni: Ancient temples known for their unique carvings. The Barakoni temple is built directly on a cliff on the banks of the Rioni River.
  • Tskhrajvari: A shrine on top of a mountain offering a fantastic panoramic view of almost the entire western Georgia.
  • Udziro Lake (Bottomless Lake): An alpine lake against the backdrop of the Caucasus. Reaching it requires a challenging but unforgettable hike.

Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti

  • Khvamli Mountain: A mystical limestone massif, which, according to legend, is the place where Prometheus and Amirani were chained. Many historical secrets are associated with this mountain.
  • Lushnu (Tsageri) Valley: Beautiful gorges with ancient fortresses (e.g., Muri Fortress) and cultural monuments.
  • Kvemo Svaneti (Lentekhi): Beautiful villages scattered on the southern slopes of the Caucasus, where there is little tourist noise and ancient Svan life is preserved.

Rachan and Lechkhumian Gastronomy

  • Khvanchkara and Usakhelouri: Racha is famous for its semi-sweet red wine (Khvanchkara), while Lechkhumi produces one of Georgia's rarest and most expensive wines – Usakhelouri.
  • Rachan Ham and Shkmeruli: Culinary masterpieces. Rachan ham is smoked traditionally, and Shkmeruli is chicken cooked in a garlic and milk sauce.
  • Lobiani: Rachan bean bread is special, often baked with pieces of ham inside.
