Avchala Rugby Stadium

Avchala Rugby Stadium is a vital center for Georgian sports, situated in the northern Gldani-Nadzaladevi district of Tbilisi. Recognized as a primary battleground for the country’s beloved national sport, the 2,500-seat arena captures the intense physical culture of Georgian rugby. It frequently hosts both domestic league matches and high-profile international youth tournaments, serving as the foundational turf where many future stars of the Lelos (the national team) forge their careers.

A Crucible for Georgian Rugby

The facility plays an essential role in the grassroots and professional development of the sport in the Caucasus. Upgraded significantly to meet international standards, the stadium features a pristine natural grass pitch and a dedicated auxiliary training complex. Its stands are intentionally intimate, ensuring spectators remain incredibly close to the action and the heavy collisions characteristic of the game. Avchala was a key host venue during the 2017 World Rugby Under 20 Championship and has been selected to host matches for the expanded 2026 Rugby Junior World Championship.

The Historic Suburb of Avchala

Beyond the touchlines, the stadium is anchored in a district with deep historical roots. The settlement of Avchala was first recorded in the medieval chronicles of Kartlis Tskhovreba around 1080 as a strategic northern approach to Tbilisi. During the reign of King David IV, it was the site of the famous "Avchala episode," a tactical military engagement against invading Seljuk forces. By the Soviet era, the area transformed into an industrial powerhouse, spurred by the construction of the Zemo Avchala Hydro-Electric Scheme (ZAHES) in 1927. Today, the roar of the crowds at the rugby stadium brings a modern communal energy to this historically significant outpost of the Georgian capital.
