Loop of Love (Sikvarulis Mosakhvevi)
The Loop of Love (Sikvarulis Mosakhvevi) is a prominent hairpin turn on the mountain road connecting Abastumani and the Zekari Pass. Surrounded by dense pine and spruce forests, this sharp curve serves as a symbolic marker for travelers crossing the Meskheti Range, offering wide views over the river valley and the forests of the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park.
The Romantic Tradition
Situated at an elevation of around 1,500 meters, this bend has long been associated with local folklore. Couples traveling through the pass traditionally stop here to make a wish for lasting devotion. Over time, it has evolved into a popular photo stop where visitors tie symbolic ribbons to the roadside vegetation, framed by the deep gorge of the Otskhe river basin and distant mountain ridges.
Geography and Ecology
The microclimate at this curve is heavily influenced by the surrounding coniferous forests, resulting in exceptionally clear air. The slopes here support ancient Caucasian firs and diverse alpine plants. It is an excellent spot to observe how the vegetation changes from thick forest to high-altitude alpine zones as the road ascends toward the summit of the pass.
Driving Conditions
Approaching the Loop of Love from the Abastumani side involves navigating steep, winding sections. The paved road up to the curve is generally accessible for standard vehicles and EVs, provided the weather is clear. However, if you plan to continue over the Zekari Pass toward Imereti, the road turns into a rough, unpaved mountain track. For this onward journey, high-clearance 4x4 vehicles, such as a Toyota 4Runner or Lexus GX, are absolutely essential.
