Kharistvala (Udziro) Lake in Shkmeri
Tucked away in the high mountains of the Racha region, near the remote village of Shkmeri, lies the mysterious Kharistvala Lake. Locals often refer to it as 'Udziro' (Bottomless) Lake, a name that perfectly captures its deep, enigmatic character. This alpine water body is nestled in a scenic hollow surrounded by lush subalpine meadows and rugged rock formations, creating a sense of solitude that feels lightyears away from the noise of modern life.
Geography and Nature
Unlike the massive glacial lakes you might find elsewhere in the Caucasus, Kharistvala is relatively small, yet it acts as a perfect mirror for the surrounding ridges. Its name, 'Bottomless,' likely stems from age-old folk legends or simply the deep, dark appearance of its water. The terrain here is defined by the unique limestone geography of Racha-Lechkhumi, which gives the horizon a jagged, dramatic texture. You will find that the microclimate here keeps the air crisp even during the height of summer, and the only sounds you’ll likely hear are the bells of livestock grazing on the nearby slopes.
Visiting Tips and Logistics
To reach the lake, you must first navigate your way to Shkmeri village in the Oni municipality. From the village center, the hike takes about 1-2 hours. While the path is generally moderate, it does involve a consistent incline, so a pair of reliable hiking boots is a must. The best window for your visit is from late May to September. Beyond this period, heavy snow often makes the trail inaccessible to casual hikers, and it should only be attempted with professional guidance or specialized winter gear.
Since there are absolutely no facilities at the lake, you need to be self-sufficient. Bring plenty of water, high-energy snacks, and please, practice 'leave no trace' principles—the pristine state of the Racha highlands depends on our collective responsibility. If you have some extra time, look for the historic Shkmeri church or head towards the Shkmeri-Zopkhiti mountain pass, which offers some of the most spectacular, unobstructed views of the Caucasus Range. The town of Oni is your best bet for finding supplies, local guesthouses, and a warm meal before or after your trek.
