Schuamta Lake (Scharekaultan)

Duration: 1–2 hours

Schuamta Lake, historically known as Scharekaultan, is a seasonal high-alpine lake positioned within the eastern territory of the Gombori Range in Kakheti. Positioned at an elevation exceeding 2,100 meters above sea level, this shallow mountain depression fills primarily with melting winter snows and springtime precipitation. Unlike the permanent alpine lakes of the Greater Caucasus, its waters frequently recede during the hot summer months, exposing fertile high pastures that local shepherds have utilized for generations.

Geographic Formation & Landscape

The lake occupies a natural geological basin near the high ridges of the Gombori Mountain Range, which serves as the primary drainage divide separating the Iori and Alazani river valleys. The surrounding landscape consists of expansive subalpine meadows and pristine beech forests that cover the lower slopes. Because the lake depends entirely on atmospheric precipitation and seasonal snowmelt, its surface area and water depth fluctuate dramatically throughout the year, peaking in late spring before gradually declining under the summer sun.

Pastoral Significance & Cultural Heritage

For centuries, the highlands surrounding this seasonal water reservoir have formed a crucial component of the traditional transhumance routes in Kakheti. Shepherds from the lowlands move their herds up to these alpine pastures each summer, following historical pathways that crisscross the Gombori ridges. The area offers panoramic views extending across the Alazani Valley toward the jagged peaks of the eastern Greater Caucasus, making it an important historical landmark for mountain travelers and locals navigating between the inner and outer regions of Kakheti.
