Sarpi Beach

Duration: 1–3 hours

Sarpi Beach is a location of distinct duality, serving as both a popular coastal spot and the main land border crossing between Georgia and Turkey. Located roughly 18 kilometers south of Batumi, it is the primary entry point for international travelers arriving by road. Unlike the sandy stretches found elsewhere along the Georgian Black Sea, the coastline at Sarpi is defined by its deep, pebble-strewn shore and exceptionally clear, turquoise waters. The presence of the border checkpoint infrastructure adds an industrial edge to the scenery, creating an environment that feels unlike any other seaside destination in the country.

Geographical and Historical Significance

The beach sits within a narrow, rugged strip squeezed between the steep, verdant slopes of the Lesser Caucasus mountains and the sea. The water here is widely regarded as the cleanest in the entire Adjara region, primarily because coastal currents move away from the industrial activity of Batumi harbor. However, the seabed drops off very quickly just a few meters from the shore, requiring caution for inexperienced swimmers. The beach is composed of large, smooth pebbles that can be slippery, making water shoes a practical necessity for comfort.

Local Context and Observations

The village of Sarpi rises sharply into the hillside above the border, offering elevated panoramic views that are often missed by those staying only at the water’s edge. While the beach area is popular during summer, the surrounding terrain offers a different perspective on the geography of the border zone. Key features of the area include:

  • The Border Bridge: A central landmark that marks the transition between nations.
  • Nearby Waterfall: A natural spring located right off the main highway, popular for quick stops before reaching the coast.
  • Geological Structure: The dramatic cliff faces that frame the southern edge of the beach, showcasing the abrupt way the mountains meet the sea.
