St. Sophia Chapel in Sameba (Gunia-Kala)

Duration: 1–2 hours

The St. Sophia Chapel stands on the windswept plains of the Tsalka plateau, near the village of Sameba (historically known as Gunia-Kala). This modest stone structure serves as an enduring marker of the regional Christian heritage in Trialeti, a high-altitude area shaped by centuries of cultural shifts and migrations. Unlike the larger monastic complexes of Georgia, this small chapel offers a quiet look into the spiritual life of rural highland communities, weathering severe winters and changing populations while remaining an active place of local devotion.

Medieval Architecture and Local Basalt

Architecturally, the building is a classic example of a single-nave hall church, a layout widely used across medieval Georgia for village chapels. It is constructed primarily from rough-hewn, locally quarried dark basalt stone, which has taken on a heavy patina from centuries of intense alpine exposure. The masonry is minimalist and functional, prioritising structural resilience over decorative elements to withstand the severe climate of the Southern Georgian Highlands. The sparse, unadorned interior features a simple semicircular apse and small window slits designed to let in narrow beams of light, focusing attention entirely inward.

The Greek Heritage of Gunia-Kala

While the foundations of Christian worship on the plateau date back to the golden age of medieval Georgia, the modern history of the chapel is deeply tied to the Pontic Greeks who settled the region in the early 19th century. Fleeing the Ottoman Empire after the Russo-Turkish War, these communities rebuilt villages like Gunia-Kala directly over ancient ruins. They adopted and maintained existing sacred sites, dedicating this chapel to St. Sophia. Today, even as demographics have shifted again, the chapel remains a vital cultural symbol linking the medieval Georgian past with the specific traditions of the Tsalka Greek diaspora.
