Salkhino Nativity Church

Duration: 1–3 hours

The Salkhino Nativity Church, situated within the Martvili municipality, serves as a cornerstone of Samegrelo’s spiritual and aristocratic heritage. Historically known as the summer residence of the Dadiani princely family, the site encapsulates the transition of Georgian noble life during the 19th century. Unlike the fortified cathedrals of the highlands, this sanctuary was designed as a place of quiet reflection, deeply connected to the surrounding valley and the long-standing agricultural traditions of the region.

The Dadiani Legacy and Architectural Evolution

The church reflects the architectural preferences of the Dadiani house, particularly during their efforts to refine their summer estates. The masonry work highlights the shift toward more delicate, refined construction techniques that were prominent in the 1800s. Inside, the space remains intimate, focusing on the preservation of local religious traditions. The proximity to the former Dadiani palace grounds is essential to understanding the site; the church was not an isolated religious building, but the spiritual heart of an estate that governed the region's socio-economic life.

Viticulture and the Ojaleshi Tradition

Geography and culture are inseparable here. The church grounds are surrounded by lands that have historically produced Ojaleshi, a rare and prized Georgian grape variety. The Dadianis were instrumental in preserving these vineyards, and the nearby, often-overlooked wine cellars remain the most tangible link to the site’s historical self-sufficiency. For the visitor, walking the grounds offers a perspective on how the church, the manor, and the vineyards formed a singular, functioning cultural unit, largely undisturbed by the rapid changes of the modern era.
