Kasuri St. George Basilica

Duration: 1 hour

The Kasuri St. George Basilica stands within the dense deciduous forests near Saguramo, representing a significant monument of early medieval Georgian architecture. Unlike the highly restored cathedrals found elsewhere in the Mtskheta municipality, this structure remains in a raw, semi-ruined state, allowing the ancient stone masonry to naturally integrate into the surrounding woodland environment.

The Three-Church Basilica Typology

The structure is a prime example of the three-church basilica, an architectural layout uniquely developed within Georgia. Unlike conventional Western basilicas where internal space is divided by open colonnades, this Georgian design utilizes solid, impenetrable stone walls to separate the central nave from the flanking aisles. This effectively created three distinct, independent prayer spaces under a single roof. At the Kasuri site, the heavy stone walls have weathered centuries of environmental exposure, giving historians clear insight into medieval construction techniques. The surrounding moss and encroaching vegetation highlight the enduring strength of the surviving apse and lateral chambers. The ruins provide a quiet, unfiltered look at historical Georgian religious structures.
