Zeda Tmogvi Ruins
Most travelers driving through the volcanic plateaus of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region keep their eyes fixed on the famous Vardzia cave complex. However, high above the deep Mtkvari River gorge lies a raw, unfiltered piece of medieval Georgian history: the ruins of Zeda Tmogvi (Upper Tmogvi). Situated on the high plateau, this site offers an entirely different atmosphere from the heavily visited monuments nearby, preserving the silent imprint of an abandoned ancestral settlement.
In Georgian, nasoflari translates to "former village," and Zeda Tmogvi represents exactly that—a ghostly, abandoned medieval village that once served as a crucial defensive stronghold and agricultural hub. While the lower Tmogvi Fortress clings to the cliffs below to control the river valley, this upper section feels completely isolated and untouched by modern tourism.
The Strategic Importance of Upper Tmogvi
Dating back to the feudal era between the 9th and 11th centuries, Zeda Tmogvi was part of a massive defensive network guarding Georgia's southern borders against regional invasions. Walking among the scattered basalt stones today reveals the foundational remnants of historic defensive walls, traditional stone dwellings, and old terraced agricultural plots. This settlement was highly self-sufficient, utilizing the flat terrain of the plateau for farming while relying on the sheer cliffs of the gorge for protection.
Architecture of the Three-Church Basilica
The architectural focal point of the complex is a classic Georgian hall church, constructed from neatly squared blocks of local dark stone. Although heavily weathered by centuries of harsh winters, earthquakes, and regional conflicts, the primary structure stands as a stubborn survivor of time. Notable structural details include the remains of a decorative stone cornice and fragments of ancient inscriptions carved into the facade. The appeal of the ruins lies in their absolute authenticity, as the weathered masonry slowly blends back into the rugged natural landscape.
