Shermazana Church

The Shermazana Church stands in the abandoned settlement of Nasoflari Shermazana within the Tetritskaro Municipality, surrounded by the rolling fields of the Kvemo Kartli region. This medieval ruin remains a quiet monument to rural religious life, far removed from the busy routes of mainstream tourism. Exposed to the elements for centuries, the structure blends into the landscape, preserving an authentic and untouched atmosphere that reflects the deeper, less-documented history of the Georgian countryside.

Architecture and Spatial Layout

The structure is a classic example of a small Georgian hall church (single-nave design), built primarily using roughly hewn local stone and lime mortar. This straightforward architectural style was standard for medieval village communities across Kvemo Kartli, prioritizing functional community gathering over grand ornamentation. Today, the roof has completely collapsed, but sections of the eastern apse and the lateral stone walls remain standing, showing traces of simple masonry techniques typical of regional rural builders.

Historically, the church served as the spiritual core for the settlement of Shermazana, which was later abandoned due to geopolitical shifts and migration patterns in the region. The surrounding territory is rich in archaeological layers, where agricultural terraces and old household foundations hint at a once-active community.
