Pitareti Monastery

Duration: 1–2 hours

Pitareti Monastery sits in a forested gorge in Kvemo Kartli, about 26 km southwest of Tetritsqaro. The 13th-century domed church, bell tower and encircling wall stand quiet among old trees, with stone carvings and tombs that tell the story of the Orbeliani noble family.

Historical Context & Significance

Founded 1213–1222 under King George IV Lasha, son of Queen Tamar. Family monastery of the Kachibadze-Baratashvili and later Orbelishvili houses. Tombs of Kaplan Orbeliani, Papuna Orbeliani and Darejan Bagrationi are inside the church. Closed in 1752 after a Dagestani raid and later restored. The complex is an active Georgian Orthodox site today.

Architecture & Hidden Details to Look For

Theotokos Church is a cross-domed building with a tall drum and rich exterior reliefs. Stone ornament covers facades with interlaced patterns, animals and geometric bands. The craftsmanship is distinct for the early 13th century. Bell tower, wall and service buildings surround the church. Parts are ruined, which shows the original layout. Interior fresco fragments and inscribed tombstones remain on the walls and floor.
