Mziuri Park
Mziuri Park is a central urban forest in Tbilisi, stretching along the valley of the Vere River. Originally conceptualized as a dedicated space for youth, the area has matured into a dense, shaded landscape that provides immediate relief from the dense urban environments of the Vake and Saburtalo districts. The environment is heavily forested, featuring walking trails that adapt to the natural slope of the ravine. Rather than formal gardens, it offers a raw, natural atmosphere where dense canopies block out the surrounding city noise.
Concept and Literary Origins
The development of the area began in 1982, driven by the vision of the prominent Georgian author Nodar Dumbadze. He imagined a "City of the Sun" dedicated entirely to children. Throughout the grounds, visitors encounter bronze and stone sculptures depicting characters from his famous novels. These figures are strategically placed along the primary walkways, blending art with the environment.
Geological Structure and Rehabilitation
Geographically, the park occupies a natural depression formed by the Vere River. This topography creates a distinct microclimate, noticeably cooler during the peak summer months. Following the severe flood of 2015, the lower basin was extensively redesigned. The reconstruction focused on ecological resilience, introducing native vegetation and stabilizing the riverbanks while adding new pedestrian infrastructure that respects the volatile nature of the watercourse.
