Green Lake (Mtsvane Tba)
Green Lake, known locally as Mtsvane Tba, is a natural alpine body of water located in the high-altitude zone of the Adjara region. Situated at an elevation of 2,058 meters above sea level, this water body is famous for its distinct green shade, which changes intensity depending on the angle of sunlight and the time of day. The lake is surrounded by a dense, old-growth coniferous forest dominated by spruce and fir trees, which forms a isolated natural ecosystem with a cool, stable microclimate.
Geological and Hydrological Origins
Unlike many high-mountain lakes in the Caucasus range that are formed by melting glaciers, Green Lake has a specific subterranean hydrological structure. It is fed entirely by underground freshwater springs. This structural feature keeps the water clean and exceptionally clear throughout the year, while keeping the average water temperature low even during the peak summer months. The total surface area of the basin is relatively small, measuring approximately 0.05 square kilometers, with a maximum depth that fluctuates slightly depending on seasonal groundwater levels.
Environmental Landscape and Biodiversity
The surrounding forest ecosystem creates a natural buffer zone around Green Lake. The combination of high altitude, clean mountain air, and evaporation from the water surface produces regular morning mists that settle over the valley. The local flora is typical of the subalpine zone of western Georgia, featuring dense patches of native shrubs and alpine wildflowers that bloom during the short mountain summer. The lack of heavy surface inflow or commercial disturbance helps protect the natural state of the aquatic environment and its immediate shoreline.
