Maghraani Bziani Church
Maghraani Bziani Church is a ruined early medieval hall church set in the forest about 2 km north of the village of Maghraani in Akhmeta Municipality, Kakheti. The site is quiet, overgrown with boxwood, and offers a direct contact with a small-scale rural shrine that has almost disappeared.
Historical Context & Significance
The church belongs to the Maghraani community of monuments and is listed in Georgian heritage inventories as a medieval place of worship. It stood in a wooded area outside the village, a typical location for local family or community chapels in Kakheti. The building is now almost completely destroyed; only a fragment of the north wall survives to about 4 m height. The ruin is important as evidence of the density of small churches in the Alazani valley and of building traditions using river stone.
Architecture & Hidden Details to Look For
The surviving fragment shows a two-step pilaster with imposts for supporting arches. The masonry is built in horizontal courses of evenly sized river stone, with occasional cut stone and shirimi limestone used in the pilaster. Look for:
- the small remains of a blind arch on the wall
- the shelf-like imposts at the springing of the arches
- the thick cover of boxwood that gave the church its name Bziani The plan was a simple hall type, without elaborate decoration, focused on solid proportions.
Visitor Information & How to Get There
From Akhmeta town drive north toward Maghraani village. The village lies about 14 km from Akhmeta on a paved local road suitable for a sedan in dry weather. From the northern edge of Maghraani, continue on a dirt track into the forest for about 2 km. The final approach is a short hike of 10-15 minutes on an uneven forest path. Sturdy footwear is needed, especially after rain. There are no facilities at the site.
