Blue Lake
Situated along the route to Svaneti within the Enguri gorge, this natural karst lake commands attention from every traveler heading toward Mestia. It is a small yet remarkably deep water body, recognized for its vivid, intense turquoise color that remains constant regardless of the season. Because the water temperature stays consistently low, between 10°C and 12°C, aquatic vegetation does not flourish, leaving the water surface remarkably clear and still.
Geological Origins and Landscape
This body of water is a classic example of a karst spring fed by underground channels. While its measured depth is approximately 19 meters, the density and clarity of the water often create an optical illusion that makes it appear much shallower. The lake is positioned directly at the edge of the Zugdidi-Mestia highway, making it an accessible point of interest for those traversing the rugged mountain terrain of western Georgia.
Cultural and Geographic Significance
The lake serves as a natural landmark in the Enguri valley, a region defined by its dramatic topography and long-standing traditions. While many travelers stop here briefly to appreciate the striking contrast between the vibrant water and the surrounding grey limestone cliffs, the site acts as a gateway to the high-altitude landscapes of Upper Svaneti. It remains a focal point for understanding the hydrological complexity of the Greater Caucasus mountain range.
