Liakhvi River
The Liakhvi River is a major and historically significant river in central Georgia. It is formed by the confluence of the Greater Liakhvi (Didi Liakhvi) and the Lesser Liakhvi (Patara Liakhvi), both originating in the Greater Caucasus Mountains. The river flows southwards through the Shida Kartli region before joining the Mtkvari (Kura) River near the city of Gori. The Liakhvi basin is a vital agricultural area, famous for its orchards and vineyards. The region along the river is steeped in history, featuring numerous archaeological sites, medieval fortresses, and ancient churches. The river itself is dynamic, with a fast flow in its upper mountainous reaches that gradually slows as it enters the broader plains.
