Laghi Iaghsari
Laghi Iaghsari, located in the deep gorges of Khevsureti, stands as a functional example of the defensive systems that once protected the northern borders of Georgia. While often overshadowed by the larger structures in nearby Shatili, this site provides a clearer view of the isolated, high-altitude defensive lifestyle of the Khevsur people. Built from locally sourced stone, these structures were designed to serve as both secure dwellings and observation points over the Argun Gorge.
The Defensive Logic of Khevsureti
The towers of Laghi Iaghsari utilize traditional dry-stone masonry, a technique where stones are fitted together with high precision without the use of mortar. This method gives the structures the flexibility needed to withstand seismic shifts and the intense freeze-thaw cycles of the Caucasus mountains. The walls are exceptionally thick at the base, thinning toward the top to maintain structural stability.
Strategic Design
Unlike lower-elevation homes, these towers prioritize security above all else. The ground floor was typically reserved for livestock, providing a heat source for the residents above during the harsh winters. Access to the living quarters was intentionally difficult, requiring a retractable wooden ladder that could be pulled inside at night or during raids. This design effectively turned every home into a miniature, self-sustaining fortress, allowing families to survive prolonged periods of isolation.
Driving and Accessibility
Access to this region is physically demanding. You must drive via the Zhinvali-Barisakho-Shatili road. This route is narrow, often unpaved in sections, and involves crossing high mountain passes. You must have a 4x4 vehicle with high clearance. Do not attempt this drive in a standard sedan, especially if the weather has been rainy, as mud and rockfall can create difficult conditions.
Plan your arrival between late June and early September. Outside of these months, heavy snow regularly blocks the mountain passes. There is no cell service in the deep parts of the gorge, so ensure your vehicle is in top mechanical condition and carry enough fuel, food, and water for the entire trip.
