Mount Kupra
Mount Kupra rises to 2,337 m in Oni Municipality, Racha. Its open ridges give wide views over the upper Rioni valley and toward the Greater Caucasus. The hike is short and rewarding, with alpine meadows in summer and clear sightlines to Shoda and nearby peaks.
Why Visit Mount Kupra & What to Expect
The peak is not the highest in Georgia, but its position makes it an excellent viewpoint. You get 360° panoramas, quiet pastures, and a sense of the scale of Racha without a technical climb. Expect grassy slopes, rocky outcrops near the top, and changeable mountain weather even on calm days.
Trail Details & Natural Wonders
- Elevation gain: around 400–600 m depending on start point
- Distance: 3–6 km round trip
- Terrain: shepherd paths, alpine grass, occasional stone sections Natural highlights include flowering meadows in July, ridge views to the Shoda-Kedela range, and sightings of grazing cattle and horses. The summit is broad and safe in good weather.
How to Get There & Road Conditions
Access is by car to villages south of Oni, such as Gadamshi or Khideshlebi. The main road from Oni toward Shovi is paved but narrow with sections of broken asphalt and gravel. The final village roads are gravel and steep; a 4x4 is recommended, especially after rain. In dry summer a high-clearance sedan can reach lower trailheads with care. From the road end, the route continues on foot only.
Practical Travel Tips & Best Season to Visit
- Best season: late June to early September for snow-free trails and blooming meadows. October brings color but colder wind.
- Bring windproof layer, sun protection, and 1–1.5 L water per person. There are no springs on the ridge.
- Start early to avoid afternoon clouds.
- Respect grazing areas: close gates, keep dogs leashed, and do not disturb shepherd huts.
- Mobile signal is patchy on the approach and weak on the ridge.
