Kulishkari St. George’s Church (Grigolishi)

Duration: 1 hour

Kulishkari St. George’s Church, widely known among locals as the Grigolishi Church, stands as an authentic monument of historical and spiritual development in Western Georgia. Located in the Zugdidi municipality within the flatlands of the Samegrelo region, this stone structure represents the architectural traditions of rural communities in historical Egrisi. The small house of worship functions not just as a religious sanctuary, but as a preservation point for medieval community identity away from the major urban centers of the principalities.

The Architecture and Medieval Origins of Grigolishi

Built during the late medieval period, the layout of the church follows a simplified, single-nave hall configuration characteristic of village ecclesiastical designs in the region. Unlike the grand, ornamental cathedrals commissioned by the ruling elite in Kutaisi or Martvili, the builders of the Kulishkari Church relied entirely on locally quarried fieldstones and coarse mortar. The thick, unadorned walls were designed for durability, functioning occasionally as defensive shelters for nearby settlements during periods of regional fragmentation.

Over the centuries, weathering has given the external stone masonry a distinct hue that blends completely into the surrounding landscape. Inside, the space is layout-driven and intimate, retaining elements of historical stone altars and fragments of traditional Western Georgian design markers that highlight the practical skills of local stonecutters.
