Koruldi Lakes

Perched high above the town of Mestia, the Koruldi Lakes form a striking alpine mirror reflecting the dramatic peaks of the Greater Caucasus. Situated at an elevation of approximately 2,740 meters, these glacial tarns represent one of the most defining natural landscapes of the Svaneti region. The Koruldi Lakes are a collection of small alpine tarns, formed by the gradual retreat of ancient glaciers and sustained by seasonal snowmelt. Because they are fed entirely by natural precipitation and melting ice, their water levels fluctuate heavily depending on the season, peaking in late spring and early summer. The surrounding terrain is a classic high-alpine ecosystem. Above the tree line, the landscape transitions from dense pine forests into vast expanses of subalpine and alpine meadows. During the brief summer months, these slopes erupt into a vibrant display of endemic Caucasian wildflowers. This delicate ecosystem also supports various forms of high-altitude wildlife, including grazing mountain horses and occasional sightings of the elusive Caucasian chamois navigating the steeper ridges.

The Shadow of Mount Ushba

What elevates these modest bodies of water to geographic prominence is their alignment with Mount Ushba, often referred to as the "Matterhorn of the Caucasus." The lakes sit directly in the southern optical path of this imposing, double-peaked giant. On clear mornings, the still waters of Koruldi act as a flawless natural mirror, capturing the jagged granite spires of Ushba in perfect symmetry. This unique visual alignment makes the plateau an area of immense geographic significance. The location also serves as an ancient vantage point for the Svan people, who historically navigated these upper ridges to monitor the valleys below.
