Mount Khyrguma
Mount Khyrguma is a 3,291 m peak on the Kobi Plateau above the Truso Gorge in Kazbegi Municipality. It offers wide views over the Terek valley, the Chaukhi massif and the border ridges, and is reached by a mix of high mountain driving and a steep hike. The summit is quiet, with no facilities, and suits experienced hikers looking for a full-day outing away from the main tourist trails.
Why Visit Mount Khyrguma & What to Expect
The mountain sits at the edge of the historic Khevi region, between the villages of Almasiani and Shevardeni. From the top you see the volcanic plateaus of Truso, the snaking Terek River and, on clear days, the line of peaks toward South Ossetia. The area is open, windy and treeless, with alpine grasses, basalt outcrops and seasonal snow patches. There are no marked paths to the summit, only shepherd tracks and GPS routes.
Trail Details & Natural Wonders
- Elevation gain: around 600–800 m from the nearest drivable point, depending on where you start.
- Terrain: steep grass slopes, loose scree near the ridge and occasional wet ground after rain.
- Navigation: no signage; use offline maps and a track. Visibility can drop fast in cloud.
- Highlights: panoramic views of Truso Gorge, the travertine terraces and mineral springs in the valley below, and the broad Kobi Plateau.
How to Get There & Road Conditions
Drive north on the Georgian Military Highway to Kobi. The main road is paved and well maintained in summer. From Kobi turn west toward Almasiani/Shevardeni on a gravel and dirt track that follows the Terek. The track is rough, with washboard sections and stream crossings after rain. A 4x4 with good clearance is strongly recommended; a sedan will not reach the trailhead. In late autumn to late spring the road can be snow-covered and impassable. Park where the track ends or becomes too steep, then continue on foot.
Practical Travel Tips & Best Season to Visit
- Best season: June to September. Snow lingers on north slopes into early June. October can be fine but days are short and weather is less stable.
- Gear: sturdy hiking boots, windproof layer, hat and gloves even in summer, 2–3 liters of water per person, snacks, sun protection.
- Safety: start early, check the forecast, and turn back if clouds build. Mobile signal is patchy.
- Leave no trace: there are no bins or toilets. Carry out all waste.
- Guides: a local guide from Stepantsminda or Kobi is useful for route finding and for understanding the border zone rules.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the hike technical?
No climbing is needed in summer. It is a steep walk on grass and scree, requiring good fitness and sure footing. In wet or snowy conditions it becomes slippery and more demanding.
Can I drive close to the summit?
No. The drivable track stops on the plateau. The final 600+ m of ascent is on foot with no road access.
Do I need a permit?
The peak lies near the border area. Stay on the Georgian side of the ridge, carry ID, and follow any instructions from border police. A guide can help avoid restricted zones.
