Kharkha Lake
Kharkha Lake rests in the high reaches of Svaneti, situated in the Mestia Municipality at an altitude of approximately 2,500 meters. This body of water occupies a glacial basin, defined by its high-altitude silence and the Greater Caucasus peaks that stand guard over its shores. It serves as a stark example of the region's raw, untamed geography, where the water's color shifts based on the seasonal melt and the clarity of the mountain sky.
Formation and Geological Character
The lake is primarily fed by perennial snowfields and glacial runoff from the surrounding ridges. Its formation is tied to the glacial retreat common in this part of the Caucasus, leaving behind a natural reservoir nestled against the slope. Unlike the larger, more accessible lakes in the region, the basin here remains largely undisturbed, retaining a character shaped solely by alpine erosion and high-altitude weather patterns. The surrounding landscape consists of granite and schist ridges, typical of the Svanetian spine, which create a natural amphitheater around the shoreline.
The Cultural Landscape of Svaneti
While the lake itself is a geographic feature, it is inseparable from the Adishi Valley, one of the most historically significant pockets of Upper Svaneti. For generations, the shepherds of Adishi have moved their livestock through these high meadows, utilizing the area around the lake for summer grazing. This connection between the nomadic pastoralism of the Svan people and the high-mountain landscape continues a practice that has remained largely unchanged for centuries, defined by the seasonal rhythms of the mountain climate.
