Kekhijvari St. George Monastery

Architecture and Historical Foundations

The architectural core of the complex features a classic hall-church design typical of medieval Georgian provincial architecture. Constructed from rough-hewn local yellowish tufa and cobblestones, the masonry reveals multiple construction phases, pointing to rebuilding efforts after periods of regional conflict. The interior layout centers on a single nave with an eastern apse, an arrangement favored for rural monastic communities. Traces of ancient stonework and fragments of gravestones in the surrounding courtyard suggest that the site functioned as a communal and spiritual hub for the surrounding settlements during the high and late Middle Ages.
